In the early verses of Luke, chapter 18, Jesus had been teaching His disciples about the things to come at the end of this age. The parable which opens that chapter is presented with this stated goal in mind: that men ought always to pray, and not to faint. It is a parable highlighting the ultimate faithfulness and benevolence of our heavenly Father, and the confidence which we are consequently justified in placing in Him.
In verse 8, Jesus punctuated that parable with an intentionally and intensely thought-provoking question: Nevertheless, when the Son of man cometh, shall He find faith on the earth? That is, when this gentile age winds down, will anyone remain who is willing to place his full and implicit confidence in the Lord? To state this yet another way, will anyone be willing, in that time, to make Jesus his King? While Jesus did not offer an answer in that immediate context, He did teach elsewhere things which reassure us and affirm a positive answer to the question.
The parables of the Mustard Seed and of the Leaven (Matthew 13:31-33), are two such passages. Both encourage us as to the growth of the Kingdom of Heaven far beyond any reasonable expectation, given its humble beginnings. Neither speak of any subsequent failure. Indeed, Jesus presents the Kingdom of Heaven as a thing which, once set in motion, cannot be stopped nor even controlled by human devices.
Why is this? It is because the influence of those who have truly made Jesus their King, is irrepressible! Not for any great weight which they themselves bring to bear, but because of the convicting power of God’s Holy Spirit which accompanies that influence and impresses it upon the minds and hearts of those who fall under it. This should be a great encouragement to every genuine disciple of Jesus who has set forth to represent Him.
It is far too easy and far too common for even the faithful members of New Testament churches to become discouraged, believing their efforts are having no impact in the world, even to the point that we perhaps begin to believe that the Lord’s work is failing. Yet this is not the pattern Jesus placed before us. Seen, or unseen, faithful representation of Jesus, does have its impact. Jesus will indeed find faith on the earth, but the question posed in Luke 18:8 can only have its intended effect when it is understood thus: Nevertheless, when the Son of Man cometh, shall He find faith in me?
